My students and I focus on integrating sedimentology, stratigraphy, geochemistry, and paleobiology in understanding the evolution of the Earth’s biosphere. Research projects include reconstructing ocean-atmospheric oxygenation, redox structure of Proterozoic and early Paleozoic oceans, characterizing microbe-mineral interactions in modern and ancient systems, and investigating potential habitable environments as co-investigator on the Mars Science Laboratory mission.
