Knox S. Long is an astronomer at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore. He has a long-standing interest in X-ray observations of nearby galaxies and led the international team that obtained the new Chandra observations of M83. He carries out research from space observatories like the Hubble Space Telescope, the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer, or the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. He currently works as an instrument scientist on the Wide Field Camera 3 instrument onboard Hubble. Dr. Long received his A.B. in Physics from Harvard College in 1971 and a Ph.D. in Physics from the California Institute of Technology in 1976.
