Development of multiple scientific disciplines is reliant on digital information, which in turn pushes the envelop of current two-dimensional storage devices (memory or hard drives). My research focuses on the development of the three-dimensional storage using magnetic ratchet - a heterostructure capable of passing data vertically by the magnetization reversal. Before the magnetization reversal was mainly induced by the magnetic field, and this magnetic-field-driven process is slow and energy intensive. Concerning this, femtosecond laser pulses provide a much faster and energy efficient alternative, leading to the aim of my current research: femtosecond laser induced control of magnetic ratchet. Experimentally I investigate the laser-induced magnetization switching in the ratchet; theoretically I construct the atomistic spin model to understand the experimental observations. The achievement is expected to deliver a high-performance storage device.
