Joseph Guhlin

I am a post-doc researcher with Genomics Aotearoa. My interests include plant-microbe interactions, especially nodulation biology and the underlying loci responsible for the phenotypic variation of this trait. My research focuses on genomics, pan-genomics, structural variation, and integration of large multi-omic datasets. I am also generally interested in the association of phenotypic variation with genotypic variation of complex multi-locus quantitative traits, crop breeding and improvement, and creating reusable software tools to advance the field of bioinformatics. Computationally I am interested in big data, machine learning, and parallel programming. My current big question is how do we conduct studies in the context of pan-genomics as opposed to a single reference genome now that sequencing and assembly are cheaper and have improved so much. And then how do we translate these discoveries into biological relevancy. Before graduate school, I worked as an independent contractor doing computer programming, UNIX administration, and database administration and design working individually and within teams. I am fluent in several programming languages and database systems.
