My scientific work centered around the ever-unmet needs of renal patients during this challenging era. In the field of transplantation, I had the opportunity of using the so-called conventional immunosuppression based on the combination of azathioprine and steroids in the first 150 renal transplant recipients of our young transplant program with acute rejection rates exceeding 60%. This approach required fine-tuning of the dosages of immunosuppressants and very close clinical care to reduce recipient’s morbidity aiming to optimize outcomes. We shared experiences with highly motivated colleagues in Spain and programs that just got on their way. Our common issues were frequently discussed in Spanish forums and journals.
