My background in healthcare epidemiology and medical microbiology has been applied to the study of the epidemiology of antibacterial resistance, especially as it applies to the healthcare setting, and as it is affected by antimicrobial use and appropriate diagnostic testing. I am board certified in Internal Medicine, Infectious Diseases, and Medical Microbiology. I am a Professor in the Department of Epidemiology, Rollins School of Public Health of Emory University, and Professor of Medicine (Infectious Diseases) at Emory University School of Medicine. I also serve as Director of the MD/MPH Dual Degree Program at Emory. I am author or co-author of more than 325 peer-reviewed papers, review articles, books, or book chapters in the medical literature. I was a founding Associate Editor of the journal Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology and an editorial board member for several other medical journals. I was active in the formation of, and served as first President of, the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America. I have served on the Governing Boards of the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the American Society for Microbiology. I formerly chaired the Microbial Devices Review Panel of the FDA, and served on this Panel for 12 years. I also served as an Advisor to the Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute from 1999 through 2008, and serve as consultant or advisor to industry in the areas of antimicrobial resistance epidemiology and antibacterial drug development.
