John D. Downie

John D. Downie (Member, IEEE) received the B.S. degree in optics from the University of Rochester, Rochester, NY, USA, in 1983, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Stanford University, Stanford, CA, USA, in 1985 and 1989, respectively. In 1989, he joined the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Ames Research Center, where he was a Research Scientist and Group Leader of the Information Physics Research Group. In 1999, he joined Corning Incorporated, Corning, NY, USA and is currently a Principal Scientist with the Science and Technology division. He has authored and co-authored more than 200 journal and conference papers to date. His research interests mainly include optical fibers and transmission systems for all length scales. He was the recipient of the Certificate of Post-Graduate Study in physics from Cambridge University, Cambridge, U.K., in 1984. Dr. Downie was elected Fellow of Optica in 2022. He is also a reviewer for Optica and IEEE Optics Journals.
