Johan Stiens

Johan H. Stiens received the electro-mechanical engineering degree with major in applied physics and the Ph.D. degree (Hons.) from the Faculty of Engineering Sciences, VUB, Brussels, Belgium, in 1990 and 1996, respectively. Since 2011, he has been holding the academic position of “Professor” with ETRO-VUB. He teaches several courses in the Engineering Science Faculty of three universities (VUB; ULB, Brussels; UGENT, Ghent, Belgium) ranging from micro-, nano-, and optoelectronic semiconductor devices and related fabrication technologies to bioelectronics and mathematical modeling of physiological systems. He is the Vice-Chairman of the interuniversity master in biomedical engineering organized between UGENT and VUB. He is the Director of the BISENS Laboratory, the Brussels Integrated Sensor Laboratory, associated with IMEC, where he is also a part-time Senior Research Scientist. He has authored one book on GaN-related semiconductor devices and more than 240 (including +140 ISI) international journal and conference papers. He holds 11 patents and 4 are pending. For about two decades, his research domain comprises the study of passive and active devices and systems operating in the 10-GHz to 30-THz range targeting sensing, imaging, and modulation functionalities. He has a strong focus on valorization of research and development results when appropriate, resulting in the founding of two companies.
