Bio
Letitia Thomas serves as Assistant Dean for Diversity in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) at the University at Buffalo (UB). With nearly thirty years’ experience in higher education administration, Dr. Thomas is responsible for ensuring UB SEAS’ commitment to building a pipeline for the next generation of engineers and scientists. That pipeline includes K-12, undergraduate and graduate student initiatives, as well as support for hiring a diverse faculty and staff. She has managed over $5 million in National Science Foundation (NSF) funded grants that seek to provide a path to success for underrepresented students in STEM, by building a supportive network for STEM Scholars. She is a resource for STEM outreach in Buffalo and Western New York, working with national, state, and local organizations to bring together like-minded individuals for STEM collaborations.
In addition to her administrative duties Dr. Thomas is committed to scholarship and teaching. Her research interests include STEM education, socially responsible engineering, social media, and qualitative research methods. She has taught courses in sociology including Race & Ethnic Relations, Social Problems and Social Justice.
Dr. Thomas is a member of various professional organizations including the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE), American Association of University Women (AAUW), Western New York STEM HUB, and the National Association of Multicultural Engineering Program Advocates (NAMEPA). Dr. Thomas has been honored with several awards, including: the 2016 Mentoring Award from the UB Institute for Research & Education on Women & Gender; 2012 Outstanding Advising Award Winner in the Academic Advising Administrator category from the National Association of Academic Advising (NACADA); and the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service, from the State University of New York (SUNY).
A native of Buffalo, NY, Dr. Thomas earned a BS in Biological Sciences from the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in Rochester, New York. Additionally, she holds a master’s in Educational Administration, as well as a master’s and doctorate in Sociology, all from UB.
