Bio
Javier Escartín received the B.Sc. degree in geology from the University of Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain, in 1989 and the Ph.D. degree in oceanography from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)/Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) Joint Program, Cambridge/Woods Hole, MA, in 1996.
He is currently a CNRS Directeur de Recherche working at the Institute de Physique du Globe de Paris, France, and an Adjunct Scientist at WHOI. His research focuses on the study of mid-ocean ridges, and in particular active processes operating in these environments such, as hydrothermal activity. This research is based primarily on high-resolution geophysical surveys and mapping, including imagery, acquired from remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), as well as deep-sea geophysical instrumentation. He has led several oceanographic expeditions, and authored or coauthored more than 50 peer-reviewed papers.
