Mark Van Gils (Member, IEEE) received the M.Sc. degree in applied physics and the Ph.D. degree in medical electrical engineering from the Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands, in 1990 and 1995, respectively. From 1996 to 2020, he was working at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd., in roles progressing from Research Scientist via Research Team Leader to Research Professor. Since 2021, he has been a Full Professor at Tampere University, Tampere, Finland. He is the author of more than 160 articles and four patents. His research interests include decision support for health and wellness applications, biomedical signal processing, artificial intelligence, and machine learning in healthcare. Prof. van Gils was a recipient of two conference awards and two awards for scientific publishing at VTT, in 2018 and 2019. He obtained the title of Docent (Adjunct Professor) at Aalto University, Espoo, Finland, in 2000. He has been a Theme Editor of the theme “Biomedical Health Informatics” of IEEE EMBC Annual Conferences, since 2015.
