I am currently a scientist at the Brookhaven National Laboratory and the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) Solenoidal Tracker at RHIC (STAR) Software & Computing project Leader. STAR is a collaboration of 57 institutions spanning over 12 countries with a total of 538 collaborators. As the S&C leader, I am responsible for the architecture and coordinating all aspects of the software needs and life-cycle of the STAR experiment. A few of my responsibilities include the planning, organization and development of activities in the area which are mission critical to the STAR Physics objectives. In turn, I am responsible for designing solutions covering for all software aspects in STAR, from event simulation to event reconstruction, database, networking and communication, distributed computing and analysis framework.
To aid in this task, I coordinates the software efforts of more than 250 physicists and 10 computing professionals in processing, registering and redistributing Peta-Bytes of physics data per year. This data is redistributed across computer centers across the world and it processing has relied and leveraged Grid and Cloud technologies on both public and commercial clouds and national Grid infrastructure. I am also the council representative for the STAR Virtual Organization on the OpenScience Grid council (OSG), a member of the Brookhaven National Laboratory Cyber Security Advisory and a member of the STAR management board. As a scientist, he has published 270 refereed papers to date.
In 2002, I took the lead on managing and evaluating the resource requirements for the experiment, developed a resource strategy planning for the next decade and started participation in distributed computing activities as part of the Particle Physics Data Grid (PPDG) collaboratory pilot. At the end of 2002, I was promoted as the STAR Software & Computing Leader and became part of the STAR management board and a member of the PPDG steering committee. I also became a member of the advisory board to the STAR Spokesman after an addendum to the collaboration charter was made to permanently add the Software & Computing Leader as an ex-officio member.
In 2001, I joined the STAR (Solenoidal Tracker At Rhic) experiment as the Production and Infrastructure Leader. STAR was then a challenging and growing experiment needed stability and consolidation of its infrastructure (the first data taking was done in 2000 was of modest debit but rapidly growing). My main contributions was to streamline the STAR production system, develop quality control and quality assurance tools for the software library releases, develop a near-real-time data production systems ("Fast Offline") to monitor the data coming from the experiment. I helped bringing the detector sub-system's code into the STAR framework and was involved in the data simulation and reconstruction process.
