José Luis García-Muñoz

I am Research Professor of Solid State Physics in the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC). I graduated and received the doctorate in Physical Sciences at the Universidad de Barcelona. I joined the Institute Laue-Langevin in 1988, coinciding with the integration of Spain to ILL. In 1992, I moved to the Institut de Ciencia de Materials de Barcelona (ICMAB) as a postdoc. I am Research Professor of the Spanish National Research Council since 2009. Founder (2003) of the Crystallography of Magnetic & Electronic Oxides group at the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC). I have served as Head of Department -Magnetic materials and functional oxides- at ICMAB for over a decade. My research makes intensive use of neutron and X-rays scattering techniques to investigate the physics of transition metal oxides and other types of strongly correlated and quantum materials. Current interests include exploring materials with frustrated internal orders (spin, charge, orbital orders and associated excitations); magnetic crystallography methods and emergent phenomena activated by magnetic order; non-collinear and chiral magnets; crystal growth; magnetoelectrics and multiferroics. As founder member of the Spanish societies for the use of neutrons (SETN) and synchrotron (AUSE) techniques, and of the International Society (Europe) for µSR Spectroscopy, I have promoted in Spain the use of scattering techniques exploiting quantum beams (neutrons, photons, muons).
