Issam D. Moussa, M.D., is a nationally renowned interventional cardiologist and investigator with over 200 publications in leading medical journals as well as numerous research grants and educational developments in the field. Prior to joining First Coast Cardiovascular Institute, Dr. Moussa served as Professor & Chair of the Division of Cardiovascular Diseases at Mayo Clinic in Florida (2011-2014), Director of Endovascular Services in the Cardiovascular Division at New York Presbyterian Hospital at Columbia and Cornell University in New York City (2004-2010), and Director of Clinical Research at Lenox Hill Heart and Vascular Institute in New York City (1997-2004).
As an interventional cardiologist, Dr. Moussa specializes in performing catheter-based cardiovascular procedures in patients with valvular heart disease, coronary artery disease, and peripheral arterial disease. Dr. Moussa has been on the forefront in advancing the medical sciences by investigating new cutting-edge therapies such as cardiac stem cell therapy, trans catheter valve replacement, left atrial appendage closure, and renal sympathetic denervation.
Dr. Moussa is a national leader in healthcare quality improvement. He currently serves as Chair of the Steering Committee of the ACC NCDR CathPCI Registry, Editor-in-Chief of the journal of Acute Cardiac Care, and Associate Editor of the Journal of Coronary Angiography and Intervention. Dr. Moussa is a recipient of the Healthcare Heroes Award from the Jacksonville Business Journal (2012) and the Service Recognition Award from the American College of Cardiology (2012).
Dr. Moussa attended Damascus University School of Medicine where he earned his M.D. degree in 1987. He then completed an internship in internal medicine at Georgetown University Medical Center, Washington, DC. Dr. Moussa moved to California where he completed a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in cardiovascular medicine at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center. Dr. Moussa pursued training in Interventional Cardiology under the tutorship of Dr. Antonio Colombo, a pioneer in coronary stenting, initially in Milan, Italy and, subsequently, at the Lenox Hill Heart and Vascular Institute in New York City. Dr. Moussa also trained with Dr. Gary Roubin who pioneered carotid artery stenting in the United States.
Dr. Moussa is married to Dr. Mireille Bitar, a pathologist, with whom he shares two children, Andreas and Antony.
