I am an academic scientist, working on tropical diseases of parasitic origin. My main objectives are to understand drug resistance in protozoan parasites and to engage in drug discovery for these diseases. Many of my scientific papers deal with discovering and characterising transport proteins in these organisms, as these are key to (1) the parasite's nutrient uptake, (2) drug uptake in to the parasite and (3) often the cause of drug resistance. My approach is to understand fundamental biochemical process in the parasite and exploit these for new drug discovery. I have many collaborations with other academic scientists around the world, as well as with some companies that engage in drug discovery or development. The organisms I work on most are African trypanosomes (Trypanosoma species, both human-infective and veterinary), Leishmania, Trichomonas and Plasmodium.
