In 2009, he started his own research programme in NUS, exploring various aspects of liver diseases including the management of drug-induced liver toxicity, liver fibrosis and liver cancer.

In recent years, he also interfaced the use of nanomaterials to explore the impact on liver regeneration as well as in, and nanotoxicology. Over the years as a faculty member, he has published about 80 papers in internationally recognised journals, and has won multiple University-level teaching excellence awards, including the "Outstanding Educator Award" at the NUS University Awards 2020. He is an editorial advisory board member of Biochemical Pharmacology and a diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology.
