Guy A. Caldwell, Ph.D., is a native of the New York City area and is currently a tenured full Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, where from 1999-2004 he held a professorship supported by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. He also holds an appointment at the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham as an Adjunct Research Professor in the Departments of Neurology and Neurobiology, where he is also a member scientist in the Center for Neurodegeneration and Experimental Therapeutics, the Nathan Shock Center for Aging Research, and Gregory Fleming James Center for Cystic Fibrosis Research. In 2015, The Board of Trustees of the University of Alabama System awarded Dr. Caldwell the honor of University Distinguished Research Professor, one of only ten professors awarded this distinction in the institutional history of UA.
Dr. Caldwell received his undergraduate degree in Biology from Washington & Lee University and his Ph.D. in Cell, Molecular & Developmental Biology from The University of Tennessee. He was a 5-time recipient of the U. Tennessee-Oak Ridge National Laboratory Science Alliance Achievement Award. Following receipt of his doctorate, he moved to Columbia University where in the lab of 2008 Nobel Laureate, Dr. Martin Chalfie, he was twice named the recipient of fellowships from the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Caldwell is the primary author of two textbooks in the fields of biotechnology and genomics marketed worldwide in four languages. Research from Dr. Caldwell’s lab has been routinely published in several high-profile journals including Science, Nature Neuroscience, Nature Genetics, Cell, Cell Metabolism, J. Neuroscience, PNAS and various other journals.
For his teaching and mentoring efforts at The University of Alabama, Dr. Caldwell was honored in U.S. Congress with the 2005 Carnegie Foundation and Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) U.S. Professor of the Year award, as one of only 40 professors selected across all universities in the United States.
In 2003, Dr. Caldwell was chosen as the recipient of an early CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation. Dr. Caldwell was a Basil O'Connor Scholar of The March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation and has been a recipient of grants from the NIH, Michael J. Fox Foundation, Dystonia Medical Research Foundation, The March of Dimes, Parkinson's Disease Foundation, American Parkinson Disease Association, National Parkinson Foundation, The Parkinson’s Institute, and the Bachmann-Strauss Dystonia & Parkinson Foundation.
Dr. Caldwell serves on the editorial boards of Human Molecular Genetics, Disease Models and Mechanisms, ACS Chemical Neuroscience, and Current Neuropharmacology and was a member of the Scientific Advisory Boards of the Bachmann-Strauss Dystonia & Parkinson Foundation, QRxPharma, and the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation.
In 2008, jointly with his wife and research partner, Prof. Kim Caldwell, he shared the inaugural HudsonAlpha Prize for Outstanding Innovation in the Life Sciences in recognition of the top biomedical research among all research universities the State of Alabama. The Caldwells are also recipients of the Blackmon-Moody Outstanding Professor Award, the premier faculty honor at The University of Alabama. They reside in Tuscaloosa with their much beloved rescued stray tabby cat, Tali.
