His current research has focus on understanding the angiogenesis within the eye (termed ocular neovascularisation) and building a platform of research based on angiogenesis for drug discovery as well as ocular gene therapy, with a particular interest in directing future work into clinical research. Currently, Dr Liu is leading a team charged with developing gene therapies to prevent and delay blindness in major eye diseases that result from pathological neovascularisation.
