Gonçalo Salvaterra

I am an anthropologist with a focus on the circulation of ideas, particularly, ideas about nature. I am currently doing a PhD in Anthropology: Politics and Displays of Culture and Museology funded by FCT. I am also a self-taught painter that lately combined art and anthropology to address intersubjectivities between me and my interlocutors. My research interests include: • Traditional ecological knowledge: Local perceptions about nature as way to understand how people interact with the local environment, and how this knowledge is passed throughout time. • Human-Animal relations: How humans influence and determine conservation of biodiversity. • Natural heritage: Official heritage practices by the State or other institutional organizations in protected areas and unofficial heritage practices understood as the cultural aspects of lived experience of those groups. • Land tenure and changing in West Africa: How the liberalization of the world’s economy and the expanding markets affect the rural communities and their social organization. • Capitalocene: The political context where geological and cultural changes happen tracing the connection between power, capital and nature.
