Giovanna Valenti

Giovanna Valenti is full professor of Physiology at the University of Bari Aldo Moro since 2002. She has worked as post doc at the Service de Biologie Cellulaire Saclay, France (1985-1987) and at the Harvard Medical School of Boston, Massachusetts General Hospital, USA (1992-1993) and from 1994 to date has spent several months at Max-Delbrück-Centrum für Molekulare Medizin (MDC) Berlin (Germany) and at the Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology Salzburg (Austria) as visiting professor. On 1992 she has been recipient of the SIF prize (Italian Society of Physiology) for excellent research. The major research topic is the hormonal regulation of Aquaporins with a particular interest in the signal transduction associated to Aquaporin trafficking. These studies led to the development of new interesting therapeutic approaches of some inherited and acquired water balance disorders such as Nephrogenic Diabetes Insipidus (NDI), Nephrogenic Syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuresis (NSIAD) and nocturnal enuresis. In this research field Giovanna Valenti established several national and international scientific collaborations. Of particular interest are her studies on pathophysiology of extracellular Calcium Sensing Receptor (CaSR) and its functional interaction with renal Aquaporins and pathological role in stone diseases. She participated to the organizing committee of national and international meetings. She published more than 100 papers in international journals with impact. She has been invited speaker in several national and international meetings. She serves as referee for international journals. She has been member of the assessment committee of European PhD: 1 in France, 6 in Denmark. She is PI in several projects (PRIN, EU projects, Telethon, Bilateral projects Italy-France, Italy-Germany, ASI, Regional Strategic and Explorative). She is member of the Italian Society of Physiology and of the American Society of Nephrology. She is Academic Editor of Plos One and F1000. H-index 33
