个人简介
Gabriel Caffarena is an Associate Professor (Profesor Titular) in the Department of Information Technologies at Universidad CEU San Pablo. He is Coordinator of the Master in Biomedical Engineering since 2017. He obtained an MEng Degree in Telecommunication Engineering from Universidad de Málaga in 1998, and a PhD degree from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (best thesis award) in 2008.
He worked as a Computer Programmer at University College London (1998-2000) and as a Network Support Engineer at Imperial College London (2000-2001). He worked as a Research Assistant (2001-2005) and as an Assistant Professor (2005-2010) at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. He is a member of the PhD Programme Electronics Systems Engineering from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid since 2015.
He is currently supervising a doctoral thesis about the use of FPGA for high-performance data processing. He has also supervised a total of 14 academic works (Bachelors thesis and Masters thesis). He participates in Science divulgation activities such as radio programs (Radio3 2019), the European Researchers Night (2014-2021), Madrid Science Week (2011-2021).
He has carried out international research visits to Imperial College London, Oxford University, INSA-Rennes, ENSSAT (University of Rennes) and IMEC; a total of 11 months. He is Invited Professor at INSA-Rennes since 2013. Currently, he collaborates with INSARennes and INRIA-Rennes (stochastic models for custom floating-point and low-power design of DSP circuits and DNN), and IIT-Bombay (real-time ECG monitorization with low-power devices).
He is author of 19 JCR publications, 41 contributions to international congresses, 4 book chapters and two patents (1 Spanish, 1 USA). He has 682 citations, with an h-index of 12 and an h-10 index of 18 according to Google Scholar; and 381 citations with an H index of 9 according to Scopus.
He has served as programme committee member in more than 10 international congresses and he is a reviewer of several prestigious journals (IEEE, ACM, etc.). He has organized 3 special sessions in international congresses, 4 special issues in international journals and has been keynote speaker at 1 IEEE congress. He has got 2 6-year research periods (2 sexenios) (2005-2010, 2011-2016). He has been rincipal investigator of one industrial project (CDTI) and one pre-competitive project. He has been a researcher member in 2 European projects, 5 national projects and 5 industrial projects.
He is IEEE Senior Member and has served as EURASIP Local Liaison Officer in the period 2010-2018).
His research focuses on the development of electronic design automation tools for low-power and high-performance computing with microcontrollers and custom hardware, the acceleration of algorithms with graphics processors (GPU) and reconfigurable devices (FPGAs), the design of optimized computing architectures for deep neural networks and in the energy-efficient implementation of biomedical application with low-cost hardware devices. Part of his research activity deals with finding alternative arithmetic circuits to optimize the cost of digital circuits, in order to achieve high-performance computing as well as low-power computing for data analysis and signal processing.
