Development of Computer Assisted Diagnosis/Surgery (CAD/CAS) systems using image and data processing with artificial intelligence methods:
I am Postdoctoral Researcher at the Advance Digital Image Processing Laboratory of UNAM, México. Since University, I have been interested in developing new systems that could help in medical procedures. During my academic and professional formation, I have developed and participated in several projects where currently the most prominent are:
1. Cardiac risk assessment and heart failure diagnosis: Development of a system to assist cardiologists in the segmentation of the cardiac chambers in 4D ultrasound images and the measurement of biometric indexes for the early detection of heart failure risk, using deep learning for automatic segmentation and optical flow for movement estimation. Also, an automatic method to classify heart failure using the Cardiothoracic Ratio (CRT), obtained from the automatic segmentation of the heart in chest radiographies, and the patient medical history has been implemented.
2. COVID-19 risk assessment using CT images: An online system for COVID-19 diagnosis and severity assessment has been implemented using computer vision and deep learning techniques for the automatic segmentation of anatomic structures (lobes) and lesions of the lungs in 3D CT images for the computation of a severity score for the patient.
3. Analysis and automatic segmentation of breast tumors in ultrasound images: An automatic method for lesion detection in breast ultrasound images using a machine learning approach (Random Forest) and genetic optimization has been implemented using texture information. A comprehensive study of several Deep Learning segmentation methods has been carried, comparing Patch Based Methods, Fully Convolutional Networks and Mask-RCNN.
4. Acquisition and visualization of 3D ultrasound images for the assistance in medical procedures: A 3D freehand ultrasound system has been implemented using GPU and Octrees for the reconstruction of 3D volumes acquiring 2D tracked ultrasound images for the assistance in needle biopsy and orthopedic procedures using virtual reality and tracked surgical instruments
5. Expert system for assessment in the evaluation, classification, and diagnosis of growth restriction in fetus with grow alterations: Machine learning and feature selection methods are implemented on a remote system to find optimal characteristics for the classification of fetal growth restriction, using data extracted from fetal ultrasound images, electrocardiography and patient medical history.
