My main line of research is the Search for Proteomic and Genomic Biomarkers for Diagnosis, Prognosis and Evaluation of the Therapeutic Response of Rheumatic Diseases. GIR has a Clinical Research Unit specialized in Translational Research in Rheumatic Diseases. We also investigate the molecular and cellular mechanisms of destruction and repair of articular cartilage in osteoarthritis. The overall objective of the group is to improve the quality of life of rheumatologic patients. As highlights of my scientific career, it is noteworthy that I was one of the first researchers to describe the association between chondrocyte apoptosis and OA, with the results that now apoptosis is considered as the major mechanism involved in chondrocyte death in OA cartilage. I have also greatly contributed to the application of proteomics technologies for research on OA biomarkers and have performed extensive research on the links between mitochondrial DNA genetics and different features of OA.
