Career Trajectory
Bio
Our medical study began in October 1978 at the Faculty of Medicine of Sfax, Tunisia. Admitted to the November 1984 residency competition, I opted for Nephrology. After six months of internship in Medical Resuscitation, I benefited from 12 months in Internal Medicine and Nephrology, followed by a 12-month internship in the Nephrology Department at Tunis Charles Nicolle hospital which helped me discover the charms of Nephrology and acquire solid basic training for our specialty. After these five semesters of residency spent in Tunisia, we benefited from a long fellowship period of 5 years in France (1987-1992). Thanks to a Fellowship from the College of Medicine (Awarded after a competitive examination on file), I exercised the clinical functions of "Foreign Resident" (Equivalent to an Intern of the Paris Hospitals "Interne des Hôpitaux de Paris") in the Nephrology Department at the Saint Louis Hospital, crowned by obtaining the Foreign Resident Diploma.
During three years in Paris, I prepared Inter-University Diploma in Nephrology. I followed the courses at the University of Paris V, René Descartes. I prepared the Dissertation for this Diploma in the Department of Nephrology at the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital. I worked in the clinical pharmacology field. My task included drug-induced nephrotoxicity follow-up, evaluation, and prevention. (cyclosporine, cisplatin, antiviral, and contrast media). Such allows me to contribute to the authorship of papers in well-quoted journals. Throughout my stay in Paris, I took advantage of the experience of the third team of Parisian Nephrology in the Nephrology Department of the Broussais Hospital. I have thus drawn a profile by consolidating my skills in Kidney Transplantation. Finally, besides the clinicopathological-confrontation staff, I have training in Nephro-Pathology at Necker Hospital.
This long training period allowed me to acquire solid basic training for our specialty.
I went back to Tunisian. After successfully passing the Assistantship competition in 1992, I was appointed University Hospital Assistant Professor in Nephrology and renal consultant. I have worked to develop Nephrology in my hometown.
Thanks to a Sistering program built between the Sfax Nephrology Department and the Sheffield Kidney Institute (SKI) in the UK under the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) auspice, a Senior nephrologist team from the SKI visited Sfax several times. I was also invited to the SKI twice for a short fellowship period in 1996 and 2003.
After passing the Aggregation competition, I was appointed Associate Hospital-University Lecturer. I maintained with as much ardor our activity in the new Nephrology Department. In 2003 I was appointed full Professor. In 2018 I was appointed Head of the Department of Nephrology at Sfax Hedi Chaker University Hospital.
