In a distinguished academic career, Esayas Alemayehu obtained a Ph.D. degree (Dr.-Ing) with highest distinction, magna cum laude, in Environmental Engineering from Rostock University, Germany in 10th Nov, 2010, following a MSc degree in Sanitary Engineering & MEng in Water Supply from International Institute of Hydraulic & Environmental Engineering (IHE), The Netherlands in 16th April 2003 and a BSc degree in Environmental Health Sciences from Jimma University (JU), Ethiopia in 3rd March 1999.
Prof., Dr.-Ing Esayas Alemayehu (born in Harar (Jegol) on June 20, 1973) joined Jimma institute of Technology (JiT) in 2011 and was named a Full Professor in Water and Environmental Engineering in 2016. Esayas continued with JiT Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering (FCEE), where he became Scientific vice Director of the institute (2011-2018). Furthermore, Esayas worked at Department of Environmental Health Sciences & Technology, JU (1993-2010) before joining the JiT. Currently he is a Full Professor and Senior Researcher at Jimma University, JiT, and FCEE. He has also serving as Adjunct Professor of Africa Centre of Excellence for Water Management (ACEWM) at Addis Ababa University. Moreover, he has serving as Guest Professor, Senior Consultant, and Editorial Board Member at various national and international institutions. Adding to that, Professor Alemayehu has been collaborating with prominent scientists from world-renowned Universities and Research Institutes; such as Rice University, Texas Tech University, University of Wisconsin-Madison in USA; University of Rostock, Stuttgart University of Technology, and HFR University in Germany; Cambridge University, UK; Ghent University, and KU Leuven, in Belgium; IHE, and Wageningen University in The Netherlands; University of Oulo, and Tampere University of Technology in Finland; University of Cape Town, and Witwatersrand University in South Africa, etc. He has also acquired numerous research grants from various organizations.
Professor Alemayehu published extensively during the course of academic carriers including 150 scientific papers pertinent to his field of work. He is also serving as a Practicing Engineer as well as Chief Professional in the field of water and environmental engineering. His current research interests include but are not limited to: Emerging Water Science Technologies; Indigenous Adsorptive Technologies; Nanotechnologies; Water Supply & Sanitary Engineering; Water Resources Management; Waste to Resource Processes Design; Separation and Purification Techniques; and Pollution Privation Control Engineering. Professor Alemayehu is also involved in several international multidisciplinary research and capacity building projects. He has secured several grants and contracts for his research & academic activities. Esayas has supervised and graduated 18 doctoral students and more than 120 master's students. He currently supervises 23 doctoral students & 10 master’s students.
Furthermore, Professor Alemayehu is the inspirational scientific leader of the Academic, Research, and Community services wings’ of Jimma University. He has held academic leadership positions for about sixteen years. He is a visionary leader who firmly believes in transparent shared governance and who fully embraces cultural diversity. Additionally, he is the mastermind and co-founder of JU’s brand Educational Philosophy (CBE: Community Based Education) that make higher education institutes (HEIs) relevant to the local, national and global needs. Currently he is a Director of CBE Office of Jimma University. Professor Alemayehu has also proven successful in the management of multidisciplinary research and capacity building projects, among others, he was the PI & Project Director (Feb 2015 – March 2020) for the NICHE/ETH/247 Project for the establishment of Postgraduate Programs, Research Laboratories, and Incubation Center. Currently, he is a PI & Project Manager of BWSplus Project (Germany); PI of HEREOS Project (UK); Gender Focused Project Leader of Water Resources Management (Germany-Uganda-Ghana-Ethiopia) to strengthen Internationalization and Exchanges among students and instructors.
