Forschungsschwerpunkte: Hirnforschung, Neurologische und psychiatrische Erkrankungen
Dietmar Schmitz ist ein deutscher Mediziner und Hirnforscher. Er widmet sich der Fragestellung, wie das zentrale Nervensystem Erfahrungswerte und Informationen in Synapsen und neuronalen Netzwerken verschlüsselt. In enger Zusammenarbeit mit klinischen Kollegen widmet er sich zudem der Analyse neuropsychiatrischer Erkrankungen.
Dietmar Schmitz erforscht, wie Gehirnzellen miteinander kommunizieren und wie Information im Gehirn gespeichert wird. Während früher der Fokus auf der einzelnen Nervenzelle lag, machen es moderne Technologien heute möglich, größere Netzwerke und ganze Regionen im Gehirn als Ganzes zu betrachten. Doch kein Organ ist so komplex wie das Gehirn. Viele Hirnforscher haben daher erkannt, wie wichtig es ist, in großen Forschungsverbünden mit anderen Arbeitsgruppen zusammenzuarbeiten.
Dietmar Schmitz und sein Team arbeiten auch an der Erforschung neurologischer und psychiatrischer Erkrankungen. Dabei kommen Mausmodelle mit typischen Pathologien zum Einsatz. So wollen Schmitz und sein Team herausfinden, in welcher Weise die neuronale Netzwerkverarbeitung im Krankheitszustand, beispielsweise bei der Demenz-Krankheit, gestört ist.
