Since September 2021, I have held the esteemed role of Technical Director at the Basque Resource for Electron Microscopy (BREM) while concurrently serving as an Ikerbasque Research Associate at the Biofisika Institute (IBF). BREM provides access to high-end instrumentation and a wealth of specialized expertise in the field of high-resolution cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), to a wide array of researchers, both domestic and international, representing diverse backgrounds in academia and industry. BREM is equipped with a Krios G4 transmission electron microscope designed for automated cryo-EM applications such as single-particle analysis (doi:10.1101/2020.10.19.334821), electron cryo-tomography (doi:10.1016/ j.str.2015.07.015), and micro-electron diffraction. For over fifteen years, my career has been dedicated to the field of cryo-EM structural biology. During this time, I have been at the helm of the cryo-EM technology platform at the CIC bioGUNE. My contributions and scientific prowess have been subject to rigorous evaluation every three years by an external Advisory Board (Sir. Tom Blundell and Sir. Richard Henderson, Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2017), a process that has consistently yielded extraordinary recommendations. My active involvement in numerous research endeavors has culminated in the authorship of a collection of over 70 high-impact scientific publications, some of which are pioneers in their respective fields. Among these notable contributions, I'd like to underscore a particularly significant study published in the esteemed journal Nature (doi:10.1038/nature25971). In 2016, I successfully defended my Ph.D. thesis, a pioneering work that introduced the first expert system seamlessly integrated into a novel intelligent control framework. This innovative system was designed to make real-time decisions during automated cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) data acquisition sessions (doi:10.1016/j.eswa.2016.02.018). This groundbreaking development harnessed the power of various image-processing algorithms, effectively leveraging fuzzy logic systems to encapsulate the expertise of an expert in a linguistically comprehensible manner. Additionally, it featured adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference systems that enabled autonomous learning from acquired data in an unsupervised manner, thereby enhancing the system's ability to adapt and refine its decision-making processes over time.
Presently, my primary focus revolves around the establishment of a robust and self-sustained research program within the confines of the IBF. The overarching objective of this initiative is to surmount the existing limitations associated with cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) techniques. My research direction is firmly rooted in the pursuit of attaining atomic-level resolution in the realm of cryo-EM for biological specimens. To achieve this ambitious goal, I am actively engaged in the development of innovative strategies that enhance the efficiency and precision of automated cryo-EM workflows. Central to this effort is the integration of advanced machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) methodologies, propelling us toward a smarter and more adept approach to unraveling the intricacies of biological structures at the atomic scale.
