Dr. Sterman’s research interests are related to the treatment of thoracic malignancies, specifically as they apply to the synergy of molecular medicine and novel technologies in Interventional Pulmonology. Over the past 17 years, he has focused on the translation of laboratory discoveries from the bench to the bedside: conducting Phase I human clinical trials of gene therapy and vaccine therapy for lung cancer, mesothelioma, and other pleural malignancies.
In addition, Dr. Sterman has also been involved in pioneering clinical research aimed at developing advanced bronchoscopic techniques to treat diseases such as severe asthma, emphysema and prolonged post-operative air leaks, as well as novel diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for peripheral lung cancers. He is a prior president of the International Mesothelioma Interest Group and a former member of the scientific advisory board of the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation.
