I obtained my master’s degree in advanced forestry research from the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM) in 2011. During the final master's thesis, I worked in the laboratory of Dr. Isabel Allona at the UPM, where I characterized global changes in epigenetic marks that occur between the stages of the vegetative growth of trees and the winter dormancy period (Conde et at. 2013). In 2017 I obtained the title of Doctor Cum Laude in Biotechnology and Genetic Resources of Plants and Associated Microorganisms, by the UPM, with an International Doctorate Mention, directed by Dr. Allona and Dr. González-Melendi at the CBGP (Centre for Biotechnology and Plant Genomics). During this period, I identified genes that regulate growth-dormancy transitions by modifying DNA methylation levels. I collaborated with internationally renowned researchers, such as Doctors Stéphane Maury at the University of Orleans, in France, where I did two stays of three and one month respectively, and Matias Kirst at the University of Florida, in the United States. These collaborations allowed me to apply cutting-edge molecular technologies (Conde et al. 2017a, Conde et al. 2017b). In 2017 I joined the laboratory of Matias Kirst at the University of Florida. We published two articles presenting a novel gene that controls wood vessel element size and a master regulator of lignin formation (Ribeiro & Conde et al. 2020; Balmant et al. 2020). In late 2017, the US Department of Energy awarded Kirst's group a $7.3 million grant to engineer bioenergy crops capable of fixing nitrogen: the NitFix Project (www.nitfix.org). I was assigned as the project coordinator. Advances in this field have allowed us to generate a patent on the genetic tools necessary to create nodules in species of bioenergetic interest. I also developed new approaches to apply single-cell transcriptomes in plant tissues (Conde et al. 2021; Conde et at. 2022). I gained leadership experience coordinating the NitFix project and supervising another researcher's work in his postdoctoral stage in characterizing the temporal and spatial hormonal changes during the nodulation process and developing a new gene mutation method using the CRISPR/Cas9 system. I was the senior and corresponding author on the resulting two publications (Triozzi et al. 2021a & b). One of our images obtained by confocal microscopy was used as the cover image of volume 888, issue 1, of the Plant Physiology journal. During my period at UF, I co-directed the final master's thesis of Henry Schmidt, and in 2022 he got the M.Sc. degree in Forest Resources and Conservation. In January 2022 I obtained a María Zambrano grant for attracting international talent in the CBGP. At the end of 2022, I found myself in the position of having to choose between the Ikerbasque Research Fellow, Ramon y Cajal fellowship and the Junior Leader Incoming of la Caixa foundation, as I obtained all at the same time. In December 2022, I started my position as Junior Leader of La Caixa. Junior Leader Incoming funds researchers of any nationality to develop a research project in STEM disciplines. Thanks to this funding I’m a leader of an Emerging Research Group at the CBGP. The main goal of my project is to characterize the molecular mechanisms of the coordination of plant development with the environment, to understand how these mechanisms cope with abiotic stresses such as drought. I’m co-directing the Ph.D. project of Arturo Redondo López, framed in the European project BIOSYSMO, given to Dr. Isabel Allona. Since I arrived at the CBGP in 2022, I directed the short-term stays of two Erasmus students, Teresa Ferreira from Portugal, and Andrea Dadina from Italy. I directed the undergraduate thesis of Victor Martin, in the UPM's degree of Biotechnology, and directed the master’s thesis of Erika Erazo, Fernando León, and Amine Yamlahi in the UPM’s Master in Plan Biotechnology and Bioengineering. I participate as a reviewer in several scientific journals such as The Plant Journal, Tree Physiology, Frontiers in Plant Science, or Plant Biotechnology Journal. I belong to the panel of experts of the State Research Agency to evaluate projects. I have participated in writing several book chapters to disseminate scientific knowledge to society, and I actively participate in scientific dissemination events. I attend conferences every year to present scientific advances in research. I taught a total of 162 hours divided into various subjects at UPM’s degrees.
