David W. Chan is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, the University of Hong Kong. He received his PhD from Monash University, Australia in 2002, and completed postdoctoral training in Robin Anderson’s lab of Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute in Melbourne from 2001 to 2003, as well as Irene Ng’s lab in Department of Pathology, the University of Hong Kong from 2003 to 2006. He worked in Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, the University of Hong Kong, as a Research Assistant Professor in Hextan Ngan’s Oncology team from 2006 to 2013, and was promoted to Assistant Professor in 2014. He has published more than 33 peer reviewed articles such as Gastroenterology, EMBO J, J Pathol and Clin Cancer Res etc. His main research interests include functional characterization of tumor suppressors and oncogenes and delineation of the related cellular signaling pathways associated with cancer cell biology. He has particularly focused in ERK, Hedgehog and Wnt/b-catenin signaling pathways in oncogenesis, chemoresistance and metastasis of gynaecological malignancies. These studies give a better insight into the molecular mechanisms of the development and progression of these disease. Other research areas include the study of cancer cell metabolism such as targeting AMPK in cervical and ovarian cancer cells, and using omental metastasis as a model to investigate the role of tumour microenvironment in promoting the aggressiveness of ovarian cancer cells. These studies will further provide a scientific basis for developing novel diagnostic tools and therapeutic interventions for these gynaecological malignancies.
