Professor Brian Oliver investigates the causes and consequences of the molecular and genetic dysfunction which occurs in chronic diseases.

His research team is located at UTS and at the Woolcock Institute where he is a Research Leader.

His major research programs include environmental health, respiratory virology, and respiratory pharmacology.

In the field of environmental health, his team is currently investigating the consequences of exposure to air pollution.

Brian’s respiratory virology research program explores how the lungs responds to infection, and why viruses, such as the common cold, can cause severe life threatening infection.

His research into the effects of nicotine, include looking at the cellular responses to cigarette smoke, and e-cigarettes. For example, he discovered that cigarette smoking can directly induce fibrosis (scaring).
