个人简介
Dr. Brian M. Wells is an Associate Professor of Physics at the University of Hartford with a research focus primarily on multiscale metamaterial design. His career started in computational and theoretical photonics in composites, metamaterials, and multi-scale systems. This research uses linear algebra solvers such as MATLAB and Finite Element Method (FEM) software to develop new theories and perform numerical simulations for design and performance improvements of optical metamaterials and metasurfaces. Current research expands on these results to the fabrication and characterization of various metamaterial and metasurface devices across the GHz regime, focusing on improving and exploring new fabrication technologies and techniques that can be used for scalability across smaller wavelengths. This includes screen printing, PCB milling, stencil cutting, 3D printing, and fabrics. These approaches are being implemented to create many novel designs; some include metamaterial super lensing, metamaterial wire-based Salisbury screens, metamaterial wire-based band-pass optical filters, antenna-based beam-steering metasurfaces, split-ring resonator metasurface bio-sensors, along with wearable and stretchable metamaterial and metasurface fabrics.
Dr. Wells has over 20 publications in refereed journals, 20 conference proceedings, one book chapter, and a pending patent. He is a regular referee for professional journals such as Proceedings in the Royal Society, Elsevier, OSA, IEEE, and MDPI. He has advised 15 research students and taught over 60 physics courses during his seven years at the University of Hartford. He is currently the campus director for the NASA CT space grant consortium. He has a bachelor’s degree in Physics from Clark University and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Massachusetts Lowell.
