My name is José Hugo de Sousa Gomes, I am pharmacist and I obtained my PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) in december 2021, ranked as the best federal university in Brazil. My whole academic trajectory is related to natural products and drug discovery. My research life started with a scholarship from FAPEMIG on the following Project: Evaluation of acute toxicity and gastroprotective activity of extracts of Campomanesia lineatifolia in rodents. Then, I got another scholarship from FAPEMIG to work on the following Project: Polysaccharides from the marine algae Lithothamnion muelleri: production, chemical characterization and antiarthritic activity, and I have published my first two articles. After that, as part of my undergraduate degree, I worked on the Collaborating project for revision, writing, and harmonization of monographs of The Brazilian Pharmacopoeia 6th Ed and I wrote two of the chapters of Brazilian Pharmacopeia, also with Scholarship from CRF-MG. During those projects, I worked on LC-DAD method development and validation, bioprospection, chemical marker isolation, IV, UV, and NMR analyses, among others. Besides, I undertook a 6 month of my bachelor at University of Algarve, Portugal, trhough Minas Mundi Program, from UFMG with a scholarship for selected students. In the same year, I have graduated in pharmacy with award of best student, due to my academic trajectory. My Master and PhD studies were focused on the phytochemical investigation of Brazilian plant species, comprising in vitro and in vivo biological assays, analytical method development and validation, UPLC-DAD-ESI-MS dereplication, and NMR analyses. The following projects were conducted by me, respectively: Stability of L-(+)-bornesitol, chemical marker of Hancornia speciosa GOMES, in the face of different stress conditions (MSc); Phytochemical investigation and biological activities of Terminalia species, in order to identify potential agents for the treatment of metabolic syndrome (PhD). During my PhD, I developed parallelly projects related to LC-MS analisys, which is my major expertise. Those are some projects: (a) Inhibition of the sphingosine-1-phosphate pathway promotes the resolution of neutrophilic inflammation; (b) Effect of the Extract and Constituents From Hancornia speciosa Fruits in Osteoclasts; (c) Ketamine can be produced by Pochonia chlamydosporia: an old molecule and a new anthelmintic?; (d) Definition of chemical markers for Hancornia speciosa Gomes by chemometric analysis based on the chemical composition of extracts, their vasorelaxant effect and α-glucosidase inhibition. The last one published during after the conclusion of my PhD, as well as (e) Oral sub-chronic treatment with Terminalia phaeocarpa Eichler (Combretaceae) reduces liver PTP1B activity in a murine model of diabetes. Nowadays I have been teaching Organic chemistry and other subjects at Pharmacy course at FACEMG, a private College, and dedicating my time to write others manuscripts related to my PhD. As part of my Professor job, I have supervised researches related to Chemical investigation, a criterea for undergraduated students get graduated in Brazil.
