Bio
Per-Olof Berggren is Professor and Head of Cell Biology and Experimental Endocrinology, Department of Molecular Medicine and Surgery, Director The Rolf Luft Research Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm. He has a PhD in Medical Cell Biology from University of Uppsala.
His research area is signal transduction in the pancreatic b-cell. Throughout his scientific career, Per-Olof has done pioneering work regarding the fundamental mechanisms regulating the stimulus-response coupling in the endocrine pancreas with several seminal contributions within the fields of insulin secreting pancreatic beta-cell Ca2+ handling, phosphorylated inositol compounds and insulin receptor operated signalling.
Per-Olof has published 391 articles and a large number of abstracts in the field of cell physiology, signal-transduction and experimental diabetes research.
He has received several awards for his researchwork. Last year he received the “Advanced Grant” from the Novo Nordisk Foundation and this year he was awarded an ERC Advanced Grant.
