Benedetto Barone

Benedetto Barone received the M.S. degree in environmental sciences from the Parthenope University of Naples, Naples, Italy, in 2005, and the Ph.D. degree in marine sciences and engineering from the Federico II University and the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn of Naples, Naples, Italy, in 2010. He is currently the Balzan Research Fellow with the Center for Microbial Oceanography: Research and Education with the University of Hawaii, Honolulu, HI, USA. He is focused on understanding the ecological and biogeochemical dynamics of the open ocean including phytoplankton photosynthesis and particle export. He is particularly interested in assessing the importance of physical biological dynamics associated with turbulent mixing and mesoscale eddies. He uses autonomous vehicles to collect bio-optical observations that serve as proxies for the ecological characteristics of marine environments.
