Byron Hoogwerf received his medical school, residency and endocrinology fellowship training at the University of Minnesota and affiliated programs. After completing his training, he stayed on the faculty at the University of Minnesota Medical School for 4 years. He joined the staff of the Cleveland Clinic in the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism in 1985 and retired from there in 2008. During his time at the Cleveland Clinic, he received internal medicine residency and endocrinology fellowship teaching awards as well as the and the American College of Physicians, Ohio Chapter, Laureate Award. He also served as the internal medicine residency program director for 7 years and the endocrinology program director for 6 years. He was the recipient of 16 years of research grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for research in diabetes and cardiovascular risk. On retirement from the Cleveland Clinic, he joined Eli Lilly as a Clinical Research Physician in the Diabetes Business unit where his focus was on diabetes drug development including insulins, GLP1 receptor agonists, DPP4 inhibitors and SGLT2 inhibitors. He retired from Lilly in 2017.
Dr. Hoogwerf is a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Endocrinology. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology and a member of the American Diabetes Association, the American Heart Association and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology. He is currently on the editorial boards of Diabetes Care and Cardiovascular Diabetology. He also reviews manuscripts for several other medical journals. He has published extensively in the areas of diabetes and cardiovascular risk.
