Career Trajectory
Bio
For more than 30 years, my basic and clinical research has been focused on autonomic dysfunctions following spinal cord injury (SCI), and I have developed a multi-disciplinary and internationally renowned laboratory in this area. Presently, individuals with high SCI rate autonomic dysfunctions among their highest health priorities, while cardiovascular (CV) dysfunctions are recognized as a major avoidable cause of morbidity and mortality. My research career has focused on understanding the mechanisms underlying CV and autonomic dysfunctions following SCI. In particular, my laboratory has become the world-leading centre on investigating the life-threatening condition of autonomic dysreflexia which affects up to 90% of individuals with high thoracic and cervical SCI. Clinical trials in individuals with SCI directed at preventing or eliminating the devastating effects of CV and autonomic dysfunctions, improving quality of life, and decreasing costly health care expenditures due to these dysfunctions are presently under investigation in my laboratory.
