Allan Harkness

Dr Harkness qualified from Glasgow University in 1994. His research was in heart failure and he helped pilot the first community nurse liaison service in heart failure. He worked closely with the British Heart Foundation to develop this into the national standard for community heart failure care. After attaining accreditation in Cardiology and General Internal Medicine, he was appointed Consultant Cardiologist at Colchester Hospital in 2006 and became the Clinical Lead in Cardiology in 2010. He has introduced new techniques to Colchester such as CT angiography and advanced echo, including 3D and stress echo. Dr Harkness has worked for many years in the education committee of the British Society of Echocardiography and has co-authored several national guidelines on echocardiography. In 2017, he completed an MSc in Healthcare Leadership and became Clinical Director for Medicine. In July 2018, be became the Divisional Director for Medicine and Emergency Care for Colchester Hospital. In 2019, he was awarded a Fellowship of the British Society of Echocardiography.
