Dr. Shadyab has broad expertise in the epidemiology of aging, exceptional longevity, women's health, geroscience, and multi-omics. He has authored more than 250 publications in prestigious scientific journals, including JAMA, JAMA Internal Medicine, Alzheimer's & Dementia, Annals of Internal Medicine, Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, Journals of Gerontology: Medical Sciences, and American Journal of Epidemiology. Dr. Shadyab's publications have been cited over 5,000 times (h-index: 34; i-10-index: 121).
Dr. Shadyab’s seminal research publications have identified risk factors for major chronic conditions of aging (e.g., cardiovascular disease, diabetes, dementia, hip fracture, cancer) and mobility disability among older adults, identified determinants of exceptional longevity and exceptionally healthy aging, and identified aging biomarkers for healthy aging outcomes. Dr. Shadyab published the first study of genetic factors associated with exceptional longevity and healthy aging in underrepresented populations. His research on longevity has received national and international recognition in prominent media (e.g., TIME, Reuters, The Washington Post, BBC).
As Principal Investigator (PI), he leads several multi-million-dollar population-based studies focused on examining the role of biological aging in the etiology of Alzheimer's disease and cognitively healthy longevity. He is PI on several NIA-funded R01s to identify epigenetic and proteomic biomarkers for mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer’s disease (AD), cognitively healthy longevity, and brain aging. In addition, he serves as an investigator at the Recruitment Core at the Alzheimer’s Disease Cooperative Study, where he leads the recruitment of patients across the spectrum of AD into NIA-funded and industry-sponsored pharmacological and behavioral intervention trials. He has published several papers advancing recruitment science around AD trial recruitment, including strategies to increase recruitment of underrepresented populations, which is a priority for the NIA.
He serves on the Editorial Board of Journal of Gerontology: Biological Sciences. He serves in several local and national leadership positions, including as Co-Chair of the Women's Health Initiative COVID-19 Scientific Interest Group, and on several committees for the Gerontological Society of America. He also played a key leadership role in shaping the strategic planning process for the new Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science at University of California, San Diego. He has received numerous honors and awards and is recognized as one of the world’s leaders in longevity research by Longevity.International.
