Ali Övgün borned in Cyprus and earned his B.Sc. in Physics in 2010 from İzmir Institute of Technology (IZTECH) under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Durmuş Ali Demir. He spent a year at the University of Southampton, England , to gain experience in astroparticle physics via SEPnet Scholarships in 2011. He then returned to Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), North Cyprus, to complete his M.Sc. in 2013 and Ph.D. in Physics in 2016 under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Mustafa Halilsoy. After his Ph. D., Dr. Övgün was awarded a FONDECYT Postdoctorado 2017- Grant to continue his research for 3 years at the Instituto de Física, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso (PUCV), Valparaíso, Chile as a post-doctoral researcher. Dr. Övgün’s has payed short visits to CERN TH Division (2017), Waterloo University (2018), Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, Canada (2018), California State University, Fresno (2018), Stanford University, Institute for Theoretical Physics (2018) and Sabancı University (2022). He was a participant of From Qubits to Spacetime (PITP2018) at the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) in Princeton (2018). Dr. Övgün's research is focused on understanding and constraining modified gravity theories using various properties of black holes and cosmological evolution. He has contributed to various analysis methods, which are now amongst the most widely used ones for calculating the Hawking radiation, gravitational lensing, and shadow cast of black holes. He has been studying various aspects of general relativity in relation to black hole properties, wormholes, compact stars, Hawking radiation, and cosmological inflation. Dr. Övgün is among World’s Top 2% Scientists in the Stanford University 2020 Releases List.
