Alfredo Huete is a geospatial ecologist using advanced remote sensing tools to monitor vegetation health and function in the face of climate change, land-use and other major disturbance events.

A Distinguished Professor in the Faculty of Science at UTS, Alfredo’s work is grounded firmly in field research investigating the changes taking place in recurrent natural events.

He has looked at everything from the cotton fields of Arizona to the dramatic impacts of drought and wet extremes on vegetation dynamics in Australia.

Alfredo leads the Ecosystem Dynamics Health and Resilience research program within the School of Life Sciences – a key UTS research strength – and his work involves the use of ground, tower and satellite measurements to analyse ecosystem responses and resilience to climate forcings and extreme events.

He is actively engaged with the Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Network (TERN), through which he leads the development of an Australian Phenology satellite product. He also collaborates with the AusPollen team in satellite tracking of emerging health threats aimed at implementing early warning allergenic pollen predictions for public health risk mitigation.

His work on tropical rainforests in the Amazon and Southeast Asia was featured in a National Geographic television special entitled The Big Picture, and he has served on several international space program mission teams, including NASA-EOS MODIS, JAXA GCOM-SGLI, and New Millennium Earth Observing-1 Hyperion Team.
