I am a group leader at the IFT-CNR of Rome. I have worked in the field of oncology for more than 24 years, and have authored 37 papers, all in international indexed journals, H-index 22. I received my degree in Biological Sciences (1997), my postgraduate degree (2001) in Biotechnology Application, and PhD in Genetics and Cell Biology (2015). From 1997 to 2011 I worked as Research Scientist in Dr. Giulia Piaggio's laboratory at Regina Elena National cancer Institute (IRE). Since 2000 to 2003 I won FIRC fellow, and since 2004 to 2006 I won a Contract for Young Investigator from Italian Minister for University and Research (FIRB), at the above mentioned Institute. During this period I focused my activity on epigenetic and transcriptional mechanisms in tumors. I have conducted pioneering studies to follow transcriptional molecular mechanisms in living cells and tissues such as “in vivo” genomic DNA footprinting, bioimaging of nascent RNA in living cells, chromatin immunoprecipitation “in vivo” (ChIP, Re-ChIP) performed both in cell lines and in tissues, that have led to the realization of various publications. Moreover, on 2006 I was teacher and organizer at the “First ROC international workshop and practical course on chromatin immunoprecipitation related techniques” held at IRE. I have acquired a skilled and independent experience on a wide range of experimental approaches and methodologies of ncRNA molecular biology, biochemistry, on bio-imaging and cellular biology. Subsequently, my studies have contributed to characterize the mechanisms by which wtp53 induces cell cycle arrest and apoptosis, and how the mutant p53 proteins exert their gain of function activities in tumors. During my latest studies on mutp53 function, I obtained data suggesting an unexpected role of p53 on miRNAs down-regulation on cancer cells and I won a Grant supported by AIRC (Dec. 2012- Dec. 2014 "My First AIRC Grant"). Consequently, I have built my own independent group. I am now an expert of the field of non-coding RNA and mutp53 network, as demonstrated by my recent publications. In October 2018 I won a Grant supported by the Regina Elena National Cancer Institute. Indeed, I'm trying to identify which microRNA are useful prognostic biomarkers in colon cancer.
Moreover, I attended a number of national and international meetings, being selected for poster and oral presentations, discussing my data with the major experts in the field. I achieved National teaching qualification (ANVUR) as University Associated Professor in Molecular Biology and Applied Biology. Since 2009 I was tutor for thesis of graduate students from Biological and Engineering degrees, and of doctorate students in Genetics and Cell Biology. I’m reviewer for different international indexed journals. Moreover, I’m an expert reviewer for the executive government agency of National Science Centre, Poland, and for the ERACoSysMed JTC-2 (“European Research Projects on Systems Medicine”, 2017).
