个人简介
Andrea A. Howard, MD, MS, is clinical and training unit director at ICAP where she oversees the clinical and laboratory aspects of ICAP's activities for prevention, care and treatment of HIV, tuberculosis and related conditions, as well as the design and implementation of training programs for a variety of learners. Dr. Howard is also involved in the design and implementation of integrated TB/HIV care and treatment programs at ICAP-supported sites in sub-Saharan Africa and provides HIV primary care at the Infectious Diseases Clinic at Harlem Hospital. Before joining the Columbia faculty, Dr. Howard was an assistant professor of Epidemiology & Population Health and Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and an attending physician at Montefiore Medical Center. She has extensive clinical experience in HIV, TB, and other infectious diseases in an inner-city setting.
Dr. Howard's primary research interest is in TB/HIV. She is the principal investigator of two cluster-randomized trials aimed at defining best practices for integrating TB and HIV service delivery programs in sub-Saharan Africa. The NIH-funded ENhance Initiation and Retention in IPT Care for HIV Study (ENRICH Study), aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a combination intervention package versus standard of care to improve isoniazid preventive therapy initiation, adherence and completion among HIV-infected individuals in Ethiopia. The USAID-funded Start TB Patients on ART and Retain in Treatment (START) Study, aims to evaluate the effectiveness, cost-effectiveness and acceptability of a combination intervention package versus standard of care to improve early ART initiation and retention during TB treatment, as well as TB treatment success, among HIV-infected TB patients in Lesotho. Dr. Howard has also been an active investigator in a number of NIH- and CDC-funded cohort studies of women and drug users, including the HIV Epidemiologic Research (HER) Study, Women's Interagency HIV Study (WIHS), and the Bronx HERO cohort.
