Khin-Wee Chen

Dr. Khin-Wee Chen is an Assistant Professor in Faculty of Social Studies Department of Media Studies and Journalism at Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic. With expertise in media and communications research as well as teaching English, Dr. Chen brings a diverse perspective to his academic career. He specializes in areas such as communication theories, research methods, media and society, digital media, propaganda, public relations, media literacy, and more. Dr. Chen has also taught English, covering language acquisition and pragmatics. Prior to joining Masaryk University, Dr. Chen held positions at various institutions worldwide, including the Gulf University for Science and Technology, University of Canterbury in New Zealand, Republic Polytechnic in Singapore, and Fairview International School in Malaysia. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Media and Communications from the University of Canterbury and a Master of Education in English Language from Nanyang Technological University. Dr. Khin Wee Chen's research interests span a diverse range of topics within media and communications. His studies explore media reception, political communication, propaganda, media effects, and the role of new media in society. Notably, Dr. Chen has examined the impact of media on political involvement in post-Arab Spring countries, as well as gender differences in expressing opinions about women serving in the Kuwaiti military. Additionally, Dr. Chen's research delves into the efficacy of political humour in the public sphere, with a particular focus on Malaysian and Singaporean contexts. His work investigates the role of humour in political mobilization and its potential for democratizing the political landscape. By analysing archetypes in Malaysian newspapers and exploring sociopolitical humour's impact, Dr. Chen provides valuable insights into visual culture, media literacy, and the dynamics of contemporary media.
