David is a senior lecturer and programme director at Auckland University of Technology, New Zealand. He has created a new undergraduate programme that captured the aspects of Communication Design, Moving Image and new technologies, such as mobile devices, AR and VR integrated within the undergraduate programme. He was awarded the Vice Chancellors's teaching excellence award at AUT and he has also worked in the field of Communication Design (speciallising in typographic design and moving image) for over thirty years both nationally and internationally.
His research is mainly structured around a practice led research platform it considers artistic works such as Graphic Design, Typography and Moving Image (film poetry, short film and documentary films).
Mr Sinfield's research study underpins the development of a series of site specific, poetic, typographical projections that recycle spoken narrative back into a local community as artistic works. It extends the concept of the portrait beyond a purely visual representation of identity by fusing typography, narrative, location imagery, sound and paralinguistics. In so doing, it demonstrates how certain concerns of graphic design might be employed to draw attention to the human condition. Furthermore it creatively expands on discourse surrounding typography as emotive by considering the erosion and decay of letterforms as generative of meaning.
Further studies has led to the animated exploration in typography to capture the human condition, whether as film titles, or animated monologues, or as political commentaries on urban decay. As a graphic designer, his research is located in the methodological framework areas of heuristics and narrative inquiry to capture social commentary with specific focus on the concept of palimpsest as a way of reading eroded signage and metaphorical relationships it might have to remembered places and experience.
