个人简介
I, Dr. Abe Gerrano, obtained both BSc and MSc degrees in agriculture (Plant Sciences and Agronomy/Breeding, respectively) from the Alemaya University of Agriculture, Ethiopia and my PhD in Agriculture (in the field of Plant Breeding and Genetics) at the University of the Free State, Bloemfontein in South Africa. I, currently serve as Senior Plant Breeder at the Agricultural Research Council – Vegetables, Industrial and Medicinal Plants (ARC-VIMP), in Pretoria, South Africa. My research focuses on genetic improvement of underutilized leguminous, leafy and fruit vegetables, including amaranth, cowpea, Bambara groundnut, ppigeonpea, okra and taro.
My research interests are development of climate-resilient cultivars with high nutritional value, optimizing the breeding pipeline through the prudent use of molecular breeding and genomics technologies, and the assessment of genetic diversity in underutilized leguminous, leafy and fruit vegetables and crop wild relatives towards the genetic improvement of crops for especially increased yield, nutritional quality, drought and heat tolerance. I am currently involved in a number of collaborative research projects with national and international collaborators aimed at improving food, nutrition and health security, particularly interventions in the areas of food science and technology in cowpea, Bambara groundnut, okra and taro for increased food and industrial applications including seed system development in South Africa. Towards these goals, I value plant genetic resources management (germplasm collection, conservation, agronomic and nutritional evaluation and characterization, and seed system research as well as documentation of germplasm accessions). Furthermore, I am motivated to involve graduate students in my research and cultivar development programs to train the next generation of crop improvement scientists for South Africa and Africa.
Currently, I hold a rating with the National Research Foundation (NRF). I have been recognized and affiliated to the North-West University, South Africa as a senior lecturer and an Extra Ordinary Research Fellow. Moreover I have received Certificates of Achievement in recognition of excellence in plant breeding research from the ARC. I have been recognized by the Dean of Research at University of KwaZulu Natal (UKZN) as a “best external examiner” of Masters and Doctoral theses. I currently hold an appointment as Fellow (research scholar) at the Montana State University through the funding by the IAEA. I have published more than 70 manuscripts in high-impact peer-reviewed journals, 8 peer-reviewed conference proceedings as well as 2 book chapters, 25 book abstracts, and 5 popular articles. Furthermore, I serve as on the Editorial Board for international journals, besides serving regularly as invited reviewer for more than 90 national and international journals. I have participated in the acclaimed professional development program, the African Plant Breeding Academy, through sponsorship by Mars Inc. I also attended plant breeding, Genetics and molecular breeding training sponsored by the Generation Challenge Programme/CGIAR. Furthermore, investments in my work have come from various funding sources (national and international). I supervised and supervising BSc, MSc and PhD graduates, and hosted a visiting PhD scientist from Africa. I have served as an external examiner for more than 30 MSc dissertations and 7 PhD thesis defenses. I also served as Technical advisor for Angola and Lesotho in designing the research project proposal for Agricultural Productivity Programme for Southern Africa (APPSA) organized by Center for Coordination of Agricultural Research and Development for Southern Africa (CCARDESA) and Agricultural Research Council for funding. I am registered with South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP) as a professional scientist and am a member of professional societies: International Society of Horticultural Science, International Legume Society, African Plant Breeders Association, and Southern African Plant Breeders Association, University of the Free State Alumni Association and Ethiopian Professionals Associations in Southern Africa. Looking to the future, I will continue work to develop improved crop solutions to food insecurity and malnutrition as well as development of seed system in South Africa. In particular, my goal is to produce legume , fruit and leafy vegetables varieties that meet the needs of farmers, consumers, and other stakeholder in the agricultural value chains, varieties offering desirable agronomic and nutritional characteristics, tolerance to heat and drought stress, high and stable yield, and top end-product quality and develop the seed system in the country. Furthermore, I aim to support other plant breeders through characterization, statistical analysis and access to genebank resources.
