Pedro Arezes is a Full Professor on Ergonomics and Human Factors Engineering at the School of Engineering, University of Minho (UMinho), in Portugal, and a visiting scholar at MIT and Harvard University, in USA. He is also the current National Director of the Portuguese governmental program for science and Technology MIT Portugal (www.mitportugal.org).
At the UMinho he is a researcher in the ALGORITMI Research Center in the “Industrial Engineering and Management (IEM)” research line, where he coordinates the group of “Ergonomics and Human Factors”. His research interests are in the domain of Safety, Human Factors Engineering and Ergonomics, particularly as they relate to occupational settings and products. Pedro Arezes is also the Director of Ergonomics Laboratory and member of the Directive Board of the MSc. course of Human Engineering, at UMinho, he's also the Program Director of the PhD. in Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE), at UMinho.
His activities include also the participation on several evaluation boards for research proposals and scholarships, as he is a member of the evaluation panel of the Portuguese Governmental Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) and also of the Portuguese Agency for the evaluation of the Higher Education Institutions and Courses (A3ES). He is has been also a member of projects’ evaluation panel at the European Comission.
Besides his appointment at the University of Minho, he has been a regular invited lecturer at the University of Porto, in Portugal, at Chalmers University of Technology, in Sweden, at the University of Pernambuco, in Brazil.

** Scientific activity **

Pedro Arezes has been a member/coordinator of more than 30 international and national externally funded research projects in the domains of Ergonomics, Occupational Safety and Hygiene. He was the supervisor of more than 70 (concluded) MSc. theses in several Portuguese universities and of 19 concluded PhD theses. He currently supervises 6 PhD ongoing projects. He was also the host supervisor of some post-doc projects with colleagues coming from different countries. He participated in 50+ scientific committees of international congresses, being a member of the scientific and organizing committees of some of the major scientific events in the domain of Human Factors, such as SHO (in Portugal), AHFE (in US), ORP (in Spain and South-America) and WOS (Europe). As an invited lecturer, he had presented more than 100 invited lectures/presentations, half of them abroad, in countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Denmark, Indonesia, Italy, Peru, Poland, Spain, The Netherlands, Turkey, UK, US and Sweden.

Pedro Arezes is being published several publications in the domain of Human Factors and Ergonomics, Safety and Occupational Hygiene, being the (co)author of more than 80 papers published in international peer reviewed journals, as well as the author/editor of more than 40 books published internationally, and of more than 20 book chapters. He is also the (co)author of more than 300 papers published in international conference proceedings with peer-review.
He has collaborated, as a member of the editorial board and/or reviewer, with more than 20 international well-recognised international journals. He is currently the associate editor of Safety Science, an Elseviers’ journal.

During his career, Pedro Arezes and his co-authors have been awarded with several “best papers” awards in international conferences. In 2008, he was awarded with the Merit Medal from the Brazilian Society of Safety Engineering (SOBES), and in 2012 with the merit medal from the Brazilian Association of Civil Engineers (ABENC), for its work in the domain of occupational safety and for the promotion of the cooperation between the two countries. Recently, in 2018, he was awarded with the PREVER award, for his work for the development of the Occupational Risk Prevention domains, the prize was awarded by the CGRICT, in Cordoba - Spain. In 2013, he was also awarded by the Necmettin Erbakan University, in Turkey, recognising his role on the domain of safety and human factors scientific domains. He is one of the members of the Executive Committee of the Safety Engineering Chapter of the Portuguese Professional Association of Engineers (OE) and he is currently the Vice-President of the Portuguese Society of Occupational Safety and Hygiene (SPOSHO).
