个人简介
According to current state of knowledge, a very large percentage of non-communicable diseases are caused by external environmental factors, including exposure to chemicals and radiation, as well as certain behaviours. All my training until I finished my PhD (1996), and over my two positions as postdoctoral research fellow, was orientated towards getting expertise in Environmental Health topics. This has been my profile and working field since May 2000 at the Andalusian School of Public Health (EASP) (current contractor) as senior research scientist. In this context, my main research interest has been focused on characterising human exposure to chemicals and related health effects, including cancer. To this respect, I have been involved (as coordinator or member of the research team) in several research projects funded by the Andalusian Ministry of Health, the Spanish Biomedical Research Council (ISCIII), the European Commission, or the COST Association. As a result, I supervised several Master Thesis and a PhD Thesis, and published several articles (see below).
During my working experience at EASP, I also run several scientific visits, having the opportunity to set up fruitful collaboration networks, and get experience in organizing international meetings. In 2002, at the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (Atlanta, USA), I gained further knowledge and experience on how to conduct Public Health Assessment related to human exposure to toxic substances. In 2008, at the DG-SANTE of the European Commission (Brussels) I gathered a very complete overview of the Commission's functionality, and I was introduced to the complex world in preparing new regulatory documents. In 2012, at the WHO European Centre for Environment and Health (Bonn), I collaborated in the promotion of a European network engaged in providing information and advice on the health impacts of contaminated sites (CS). Finally, in 2018, at the JRC-European Commission (Ispra, Italy), I shared experiences with project leaders from different units to explore the possibility to use European datasets for HI assessment in CS across Europe.
As a lecturer, I have successfully designed, developed, and implemented more than 120 innovative training programs for Public Health Officers on different Environmental Health issues (chemical safety, drinking water quality, risk assessment, etc.). I also provide up-to-date scientific and technical information and advice on specific policy-relevant issues to the Andalusian and Spanish Governments.
At present, I am president of the HIA section within EUPHA.
