Career Trajectory
Bio
Dr. Md Robiul Karim is a veterinarian who graduated from Chattogram Veterinary and Animal Sciences University in Bangladesh with a DVM degree in 2005. He received his MS in Medicine degree from Bangladesh Agricultural University in 2007. Dr. Karim started his career as AVS in the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Program of Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) where he served for three years. He joined the research group of Prof. Dr. Longxian Zhang at International Joint Research Laboratory for Zoonotic Diseases of Henan and received his PhD degree in 2014 from Henan Agricultural University, China. Dr. Karim has been working on molecular epidemiology and population genetics of Cryptosporidium, Giardia, Microsporidian Enterocytozoon bieneusi and other intestinal parasites since the beginning of his PhD program in 2011. Soon after completing his PhD, he was hired as a post-doctoral scholar at the State Key Laboratory of Bioreactor Engineering, School of Resources and Environmental Engineering, East China University of Science and Technology, Shanghai, China, where he continued his research for six months. Then he moved to the Key Laboratory of Tropical Disease Control, Zhongshan School of Medicine, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, China, as a post-doctoral fellow. In this lab, he had been working on Wolbachia-based biological control of mosquitoes and the infections they carry. In 2016, Dr. Karim was appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine & Animal Science, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU), Gazipur, Bangladesh. Currently, he is an Associate Professor. His research interests focus on molecular epidemiology, population genetics, transmission and environmental biology of food- and water-borne pathogens as well as other emerging zoonotic pathogens; metagenomics and whole genome sequencing of pathogens and the development of effective molecular epidemiologic tools; vector-borne tropical diseases and Wolbachia-based biological control of mosquito vectors. He has been involved in several research projects funded by a variety of sources, including the RMW of BSMRAU, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the University Grants Commission, and the Krishi Gobeshona Foundation (KGF) of Bangladesh. He is the author and coauthor of more than 40 papers in international journals indexed by the Web of Science Core Collection, more than 16 papers in local journals and nearly 10 conference contributions.
