Bio
As a full-time academic plastic and hand surgeon, I have a particular interest in research projects with a strong potential for clinical translation. My long-term research interests are related to outcomes data in the management of congenital hand differences and obstetrical brachial plexus palsy, molecular pathogenesis of Dupuytren’s disease, and surgical education. My academic training and research experience have provided me with an excellent background in biological disciplines including molecular biology, and microbiology. As an undergraduate, I was able to conduct research with Dr. Dennis Hruby in a vaccinia pox laboratory. Two summers of research were funded by Howard Hughes Medical Institute grants. As I entered medical school, my research focused on the outcomes of surgical treatment of facial nerve palsy and free tissue reconstruction in complex traumatic wounds of the lower extremity. I developed familiarity with survey-based assessments and validated outcome measures. During my residency and fellowship years, I expanded on this skill set to develop and validate a grading scale for age related changes of the neck. I conducted reviews of trauma databases to understand hand injury in our patient population, mechanical patterns of concomitant carpal fractures, and avascular necrosis of the capitate. As I entered academic practice, I have continued to build on my previous interests in outcomes for free tissue transfer in the pediatric population, a molecular analysis of Dupuytren’s disease, and an analysis of outcomes after digit replantation which was selected for presentation at the congress of the World Reconstructive Society of Microsurgery. My work with the molecular pathogenesis of Dupuytren’s has focused around identification of therapeutic targets for curative treatment. This work has been funded by a seed grant from the American Association for Surgery of the Hand and has also been awarded the Andrew Weiland Basic Science Grant from the American Foundation for Surgery of the Hand.
